Poem on the Loner
I lean against the playground wall,
Watching the children play.
I used to be like that,
Carefree and happy,
But that was in the past.
Now I’m lonely,
But who would befriend me,
Nobody knows.
I wish to play with them,
But every time they pass by me in slow huddled groups,
Each in their familiar clique,
I knew they were talking about me.
I had no choice but to be alone,
Staying away from them,
They are fearful of me,
Keeping a distance,
That’s not what I wanted.
To be a Loner in the children’s eyes.
Why nobody understands?
That a Loner needs a friend too.
What are your impressions of the boy as well as the children in the poem?
My impression of the boy is that he is a very silent and mysterious. He is anti-social and watches the children playing in the playground. He keeps all his feelings in his heart and never expresses them. I think the boy has been inflicted with some physical abuse by bullies and fears the people around him. “His loneless is his shell and shield.”This shows that the boy is lonely, like said above. He hides his loneless in him and his loneless is to protect him from the others. Thus, I feel that he is a pathetic boy who could not have friends although he longs for one unless he changes his mindset and forgets about his past.
The children are lively and contented with what they have. However, they should not be huddling in small groups and talking softly, gossiping about the boy. They should go up to him and offers him to play with them. With the children gossiping, the boy would feel more inferior. “In slow huddled groups, low talking.”This shows that the children have a bad impression of the boy and as said above, the children should not be like that. I feel that the children should have gone up to him and play.
What have you learnt from this lesson?
I've learnt that you will need to apply T.E.A.Q (Topic Sentence, Explanation, Analyze and Quote) in what you observe and we could not judge someone based on their looks. Eg. He is a selfish boy. (Topic Sentence) Another boy came and said that the boy did not lent his stationary to those who forgot to bring theirs. (Explanation) Did not lent his stationary. (Quote) Thus, the boy is selfish towards others and only thinks about himself. (Analyze)
I've also learnt that we need to have an explanation in what we see.
For example. In the The Dark Knight video, if we said that the Joker is a cruel man. However, we need to have evidence against him. We cannot conclude just by seeing the looks even though he might be really ugly.
Do you sympathize with the Joker?
Yes, I do sympathise with the Joker. He is pitiful although he kills his own friends who helped him during the robbery. The Joker is what he is today because of a series of misfortune that befallen on him. The Joker was an unnamed laboratory assistant who quits his job at the chemical company to become a stand-up comedian, only to fail miserably. Desperate to support his pregnant wife, Jeannie, he agrees to guide two criminals through the plant to rob the next door card company. However, during the planning, his wife and his unborn child passed away in a household accident. He decided to back out but the two criminals strong-arm him into keeping his commitment to them. When Batman appeared, the Joker panicked and delibrately jumps into the chemical plant's toxic waste vat to escape and is swept thgrough a pipe leading to the outside. Once outside, he discovered that he has chalk-white face, ruby-red lips and green hair. Due to the turns of events, the Joker went insane and became what he is today. Thus, its because of his loss of family that turned him into what he is today. "It's too late for that...far too late. " It shows that if Joker had a choice, he would not commited the robbery and if his wife and unborn child were still alive, he would have a happy life, but it was too late. The Joker is disfigured because of his escape from Batman, thus, he was forced to have hatred in him and has a reason to hate Batman.
